Cost Cutting

Saving Money on Your Project

Renovating, refurbishment, house extensions or a self build project can be an expensive process. It may be considered a great achievement to produce the perfect build whilst saving money. However, whilst cutting costs it is important that you ensure the savings are made in the right places so the end product is a build you can be proud of.

The cost of materials & services varies tremendously depending upon where you source them. Taking the time to do a little homework is certainly worth the effort when you consider the savings you will make. Contact suppliers, there is often a marked difference in the cost of a product being supplied directly to someone in the trade, but it does not mean you cannot receive the same discount with a confident approach. Ebay is an often overlooked source for building products. With a little luck and patience bargains are waiting to be discovered.

It can be a false economy to assume those materials which are hidden from the public eye are the areas in which to cut costs. Using cheaper materials at this stage will often result in a negative outcome for your project. Be careful purchasing and choosing cheaper insulation products, or windows if it does not provide equivalent U-values. An area in which you could make savings can be with the use of off the shelf products rather than bespoke.

Using top quality materials interlinked with affordable finishes from larger stores can produce the overall desired result with significant savings. Buying direct can also be beneficial, and comparing items before making a final decision can also help reduce the amount spent on your project. It is also worth considering the use of expensive finishes to produce the overall look of a quality end result, for example cheaper units can be enhanced with the use of expensive door knobs.

Get hands on and learn some DIY although it is important to know your limitations as you want to aim for a professional finish.

One thing I always remind clients of, do your homework and study the quotes carefully. Quite often the quotes are not like for like which is not always apparent until you dig a little deeper. Choosing carefully pays dividends in the long run.
